Fiji looking to maximise superyacht potential
As tourism is a vital part of the Fijian Islands economy, spreading the message to the yachting community and cruise ship operators that it is keen to attract more patronage is a key element of its marketing. The message will be pushed hard this year at various travel and tourism shows with the next at the Miami cruise shipping event later this month. This show will also cover the superyacht market. Location and the natural beauty of the islands is the thing that draws an increasing number of superyachts to the Pacific Islands. Underpinning this however is the increasing capacity for berthing superyachts and a good range of support services including repairs and maintenance. As to new capacity Port Denarau, one of the largest marinas in Fiji, has just opened a new 48-berth extension that is able to berth yachts up to 75m. These berths were installed by Bellingham Marina and the berth services include water, Wifi and 120A electrical supply.
This expansion is one of a number planned at marinas throughout the islands. Other incentives have included a recent drop in yacht import taxes from 34 per cent to 5 per cent so encouraging investment in new craft. With yachts cruising further a field, Fiji is a natural for those that go to Australia or New Zealand. The Fiji tourism authority now has a dedicated person working on the marine leisure sector because it is keen to encourage more chartering visits to and around the islands.
