"The Danish market is currently very healthy and that applies
in just about all sectors," says Hans Andersen, general secretary
of Danboat, the Danish marine industry group whose corporate membership
is now up to around the 200 mark. "Our boat and yacht yards are
doing well and so are all the marine equipment and service companies
that are supplying and supporting them. And thankfully, most are doing
extremely well in export markets too."
Domestic consumption of boats and boating-related products and equipment
is also running at a strong level, suggests Andersen, although he stresses
that there are no hard numbers with which to go on. His view simply
reflects what his members tell him and what is happening at a macro-economic
level.
"The Danish economy certainly seems okay at the moment,"
says Andersen. "And we don’t see any major changes looming
on that score, unless of course things deteriorate internationally.
Much of the health in the economy can be linked to high property prices,
low interest rates and low unemployment, all of which help to underpin
consumer confidence. Our government is pretty stable these days. There
will be an election next year, but we are not really expecting there
to be any major shift. Just about all of my members are predicting more
growth again for 2005."
Sales at the most recent 2004 Copenhagen International Boat Show, a
biennial event held over two weekends in March at the Bella Center,
proved successful. That show managed to attract around 350 exhibitors
and 50,000 visitors
