World sailboat production figures at your fingertips...
By IBI Magazine
The first of IBI's in-depth boatbuilding surveys, New-Build Estimates 2004/05: Sailboats (Global) is now available for immediate delivery. An industry first, this 180-page report assesses the new-build sailboat and sailing yacht market globally during 2004 and provides forecasts for 2005. Constituting the most in-depth international study of its kind ever produced, it covers all sailboats from 6m (20ft) trailer-boats up to the biggest sailing superyachts, although it steers clear of the pure raceboat sector. The author of the report is Phil Draper, widely acknowledged to be a world authority when it comes to boatbuilder numbers, having spent the past 16 years researching marine industry activity, particularly as the special reports editor of IBI Magazine and as the editor of IBI's sister magazine European Boatbuilder. The structure of New-Build Estimates 2004/05: Sailboats (Global) is unique. It is not so much about statistics as market data. It comprises a market overview, a comprehensive A-Z of boatbuilders, and an approximate size-category breakdown of units and estimated values. The heart of the report is the A-Z of more than 150 of the most prominent boatbuilders around the world, each with an entry that includes contact details and model-range information, as well as number of employees, production volumes, turnover and export percentages. All entries include background notes, some of which include financial histories and recent production mixes, and, for the superyacht builders, launch lists. Many of the entries also include recent comments from senior company executives, so provide considerable depth and insight, particularly as regards forecasts and long-term strategies. Finally all the relevant unit and value figures in the report are broken down across five size categories - 6m-8.9m (20ft-29ft), 9m-11.9m (30ft-39ft), 12m-14.9m (40ft-49ft), 15m-24.3m (50ft-79ft), and 24.4m (80ft) plus. Each shows clearly what the individual boat yards are deemed to have contributed to the particular section. The majority of the data in this report comes from the builders themselves, but in the few cases where information has not been disclosed the author has estimated the production totals and values. The result is a unique model of the sailboat building industry globally, an invaluable tool for all those with a serious professional interest in the scope and development of the boatbuilding industry internationally - everyone from the top management of boatbuilders and equipment manufacturers to yacht designers and industry investors. One of the most important characteristics of this report is its transparency, meaning all the numbers and totals in the breakdowns relate back to the individual builders. Up to now surveys of this industry have never revealed where the numbers came from, which has always tended to undermine confidence and serve to hide inaccuracies. The price of the standard report is £2,500, E3,625 or US$4,750.The report will be e-mailed as a pdf file immediately, with CD back-up copies supplied by post. The report will also be revised annually, with the updates available to past customers on a subscription basis. Customised reports offering further detail of market niches, whether defined by size or type of product, may be commissioned separately.
