Work begins on Denia port expansion

By IBI Magazine/Roberta Etter

Work has begun on a project to expand Denia port, Spain, with 275 additional berths for the start of the America's Cup regatta in Valencia.

Licuas SA of Madrid, the company awarded the contract for the expansion of the Mollet dÉspanya area, specialises in urbanisation projects and large civil works.

Though originally budgeted at €1.5 million, the latest figures for the project are closer to €6 million, with the completion date of January 2007 aimed to coincide with the start of the America's Cup.

The expansion of the port will make it one of the best equipped in the region. It is proposed that the moorings, which are suitable for boats between 5m-12m (16ft-39ft), will be allocated on the basis of 42 per cent for rent, 35 per cent for sale and 23 per cent reserved for visiting craft.

The new berths, in addition to those already available in Club Nautica, Marina de Denia and El Raset port areas, will bring the total number of moorings in Denia to 1,799.
