South African Boating Awards has over 300 attendees from industry

Over 300 representatives from boatbuilders all over South Africa attended the inaugural South African Boating Awards ceremony, hosted by the Cape Town Boatbuilding & Technology Initiative. The ceremony handed out 37 awards to companies and individuals nominated within the industry. "The aim of the event was to acknowledge those who have been instrumental in bringing together what has historically been a very fragmented industry and to recognise excellence in the industry," noted a statement by the organisers. The awards ranged from the most promising student in a boatbuilding programme to a lifetime achievement award for South Africa's largest boatbuilder. The awards were for: Most Promising Student at the Boatbuilding School at False Bay College: Patrick Qengqani Most Successful Jumpstart Intern 2006: Palindrome Seacraft. Jumpstart is a CTBi programme giving SMME & BEE company's the chance to be mentored in upgraded business practices, access to free marketing materials and the opportunity to market themselves to the industry free of charge during the Cape Town Boatshow; Innovator of the Year: Sparcraft Masts. New Carbon Fibre mast building factory building 150 rigs per annum under license from Southern Spars in New Zealand. Captain Salvatore Sarno, Team Shosholoza Local Component Manufacturer 2006: Salie Jacobs, GS Jacobs and Son CC. The king of Stainless Steel; Jo Fensham, Jo Fensham Yacht Upholstery. More than 30 years of service to the industry in many areas from Commodore, successful Businessman, NSRI CEO and the man credited with getting the Cape to Rio Race back up and running. Peter Dean (Senior) Designed and started building sailing catamarans years before anyone else. A true pioneer. Mr. Bob van Niekerk. Powerboat designer over 30 years. Lifetime achievement awards: John Robertson. CEO Robertson & Caine International, the biggest boatbuilder in SA. Chris Bonnet. Legendary Sailing School entrepreneur credited with introducing over 30,000 people to the sport.
