European boat award winners revealed

By IBI Magazine

The winners of the 2006/07 European Yacht of the Year awards were announced on the opening night of boot Düsseldorf in Germany last week.

The awards, which were judged by a panel of senior journalists drawn from 10 of Europe's top yachting magazines, recognise excellence in a range of categories for yachts launched in 2006.

All new models were test sailed over the last 12 months.

In the sailing category, this year's winners were as follows:

  • Elan 340 — up to 10m
  • Salona 37 — up to 12m
  • Dehler 44 — up to 14m
  • X-55 — above 15m

Winners in the powerboat category were:

  • Sessa S 26 — up to 30ft
  • Fairline Targa (pictured) — up to 40ft
  • Sarnico Spider — up to 50ft
  • Azimut 62S — over 50ft

Bénéteau also received a special award for innovation and development.

Magazines from 10 European countries, including Boote (Germany), Motor Boat and Yachting (UK), Barche a Motore (Italy), Waterkampioen (The Netherlands) and Yate (Spain), nominated possible candidates over the course of 2006 before the panel produced a shortlist of yachts. The final judging took place in November.
