HISWA introduces paintwork standard

By IBI Magazine

The HISWA Association in The Netherlands has introduced a new paintwork standard for yachtbuilders. Developed in cooperation with yards, paint suppliers, painting companies and an expertise bureau, the new HISWA paintwork standard covers features such as gloss, coating, observable orange peel effect, runs and sags, and dust contamination.

"Until now there has been no objective standard with respect to the painting of yachts," says Micha'l Steenhoff, manager of yachtbuilding at the HISWA Association. "While certain contracts mention quality of paintwork, this is not actually specified in terms of the performance values."

Application of the new standard, which is non-compulsory for HISWA members, is designed to offer clarity to yards and owners alike regarding the aesthetic aspects of paintwork. It is also expected to help prevent disputes over quality. COT, an independent centre for research and technical consultancy, provided the necessary research and testing for the new standard.
