Soundings Trade Only editor dies
By IBI Magazine
JoAnn Goddard, associate editor of Soundings Trade Only, died unexpectedly this week of natural causes, while covering the American Boating Congress in Washington, DC. She was 44. "We're all deeply saddened by this tragedy," said Ian Bowen, editorial director for Soundings Publications, on the Trade Only website. "JoAnn was an excellent reporter, employee and a great person whom we will miss very much. Her fair and accurate reporting earned her many sources within the marine industry who will also be saddened by her passing." Goddard worked for Soundings Publications in Essex, Connecticut, for 10 years as both an editor at Soundings Trade Only and Soundings magazines. She won multiple awards for her writing, including the top Boating Writers International award in 2001. Last year, she received a national Apex award in the news writing category for her article on a marina in Block Island, Rhode Island. "JoAnn was my right-hand woman who lent me her expertise. I trusted her implicitly and I was most fortunate and privileged to have had her on my staff. I will miss her terribly," said Lois Caliri, editor of Soundings Trade Only, on the website. "JoAnn was the consummate professional," added Michael Verdon, US correspondent for IBI magazine. "She was always a bright light in the press corps at trade events, ready with a smile and joke. But she was also a hard-worker, extremely talented writer and a great competitor. The community of boating writers will be much poorer without her." Goddard is survived by her husband David and two college-aged children, Lincoln and Krista, her parents, a brother and a sister.
