Offshore Spars expands facility

By IBI Magazine

Offshore Spars, a US manufacturer of carbonfibre and alloy mast systems, broke ground last week on a major expansion at the group's facility in Chesterfield, Michigan.

The company is adding another 16,000sq ft of space to its factory floor, nearly doubling the amount of workable floorspace, and will extend its 70ft (21.3m) autoclave by another 40ft (12.1m). The expansion will also include the construction of two new paint spray booths — one measuring 150ft (45.7m) and the other 80ft (24.4m). All work is expected to be completed by October.

"We are obviously pleased that continuing demand for our product has resulted in the need for a larger facility," says company owner/president Mike Feldman. "Offshore Spars is one of only two or three mast makers in the world that male mould and autoclave cure. This 40ft (12.1m) extension to our existing autoclave will now allow us to seamless mould and autoclave cure our masts to a length of 110ft (33.5m)."

Based in Chesterfield, Michigan, which is located around 30 miles north of Detroit, Offshore Spars builds carbonfibre and aluminium mast systems for sailing yachts 12m (39ft) and over. The company also has a manufacturing facility in Jakobstad, Finland.
