Mana sinks at sea

By IBI Magazine/Michael Howorth

Rescue workers have evacuated a yacht, on which members of the royal family of Saudi Arabia had been sailing in the Greek islands, after a fire broke out aboard the vessel.

The Greek newspaper Kathimerini has reported that the yacht had been a few nautical miles off the southeast of the island off Poros when the fire broke out in the vessel's engine room and she sank shortly afterward. The cause of the blaze is at this stage unclear.

The Greek Merchant Marine Ministry has confirmed the yacht's name as Mana, a 30m (98ft)-plus yacht thought to have been built in Turkey during 1997, and that she was on a voyage from Spetses to Kalamaki on Sunday, August 31 in the morning and sank in the afternoon after a fire broke out on board. The five passengers and six crew on board had been evacuated safely from the vessel.
