Superyacht Design Symposium
By IBI Magazine/Bransom Bean
The two-day SuperYacht Design Symposium organised by Boat International Media closed Tuesday in Manhattan. Titled "Designing the Impossible", this first of what is to be an annual event brought together delegates from around the world including 20 superyacht owners, some joined by their families, to hear other yacht owners describe their own experiences designing, building and designing their own yachts as well as designers Ron Holland, Martin Francis, Philippe Briand and Ed Dubois. Boat International's CEO, Tony Harris, opened saying he was handing the microphone to the owners - "The very people who ultimately fund the whole industry and whose voice is often forgotten". Owners providing personal insight into the challenges and rewards of their own yachts were Tom Perkins, owner of Maltese Falcon, Kim Vibe-Petersen, Jan-Eric Österlund, Eric Wittouck and Michael Bradfield. Considerable discussion focused on the efforts to make yachts green, which may be the new design factor that replaces size or unique appearance as the new benchmark for luxury yachts of the future.
