CMD launches new engines for commercial market
By IBI Magazine
Cummins Mercruiser Diesel (CMD) said that it is expanding its reach into the commercial/government with a pair of engines that have a Light Commercial (LC) diesel rating. CMD's new QSD 2.8 220hp and QSD 4.2 320hp engines, available in both sterndrive and inboard versions, will be targeting a specialised high-speed boat market. Chris Wachowski, high speed diesel product manager for CMD, told IBI that the new engines were developed for specialised government and commercial applications. "The market for those types of boats is strong in different parts of the world," he said. "The potential market is huge in the Northwest, with small patrol boats, commercial jetboats and RIBs from the Navy. We've had a lot of customers who use HO engines that will be using these new engines." The LC rating is for use in variable-load, planing-hull applications where full power is limited to one hour out of every eight hours of operation. Wachowski said the new engines are commercialised versions of existing recreational products, designed to perform to tighter emissions standards over a longer-duty cycle. CMD said the new engines are certified to EPA Tier 2 emissions levels. CMD added that the LC diesel rating will cover 500-or-less annual operating hours or two years.
