Marina Pez Vela to open this autumn

By IBI Magazine

Costa Rica's Marina Pez Vela in Quepos is to open this autumn, with the first 100 floating concrete slips available for customers following the completion of Phase I of construction.

Dredging of the marina basin, which stretches more than one mile in circumference, is complete with the removal of more than 270,000m3 of sand. This accomplishment has allowed Bellingham Marine to begin the dock assembly process and water installation of 100 concrete slips, ranging from 11m-61m (35ft-200ft). All docks are equipped with individual pedestals and dock boxes.

According to project founder Harold Lovelady, putting docks into the water is the result of nine years of preparation and work, including the placement of 300,000m3 of rock; 4,000 concrete dolos; 4,800 tonnes of sheet piles; and a full array of utilities.

"We are moving at full speed for opening the initial 100 slips this fall and welcoming our first customers," says Lovelady. "Our extraordinary project team is building a marina that will be exceptional for those who stay on a permanent, annual or transient basis."

Additional work in progress includes a 213m (700ft)-long fuel dock with diesel and gas tanks holding 36,000 gallons of fuel, a high pressure fresh water system with a 4,000m3 storage capacity, state-of-the-art septic treatment plant, high pressure fire control system, fabrication of decorative splash walls, and landside buildings to house Customs, Immigration, marina office and marine store.

Once completed, Marina Pez Vela will be the largest full-service marina in Costa Rica, equipped with 300 floating concrete slips, 120-unit dry storage facility, and a maintenance and repair yard with 75 and 200-tonne travel lifts. Future landside development is also planned to include a hotel, residences, restaurants, and shops.
