Morris Yachts wins US Coast Guard contract
By IBI Magazine
US boatbuilder Morris Yachts has won a contract to build four Leadership 44 training vessels for the US Coast Guard (USCG) Academy. The new 13m (44ft) vessels, designed by US naval architect David Pederick, will replace the USCG's old Luders sailing craft. Construction will begin later this year.
"This is a very prestigious and timely contract for Morris Yachts," says company president Cuyler Morris. "It is an honour to be chosen by our country's Coast Guard to build these craft. These vessels are the foundation of leadership training at the Coast Guard Academy. Secondly, it allows Morris to bring back as many as 20 of our skilled workers who were furloughed this summer due to economic times."
Later this autumn, Morris plans to rehire several mechanics, electricians, carpenters and composite craftsmen to handle the increased workload.
Founded in 1972 by Tom Morris, Morris Yachts offers a range of semi-custom and custom sailing yachts from 9m-21m (29ft-70ft) in length. The company is based in Bass Harbor, Maine.
