New Zealand forms new marine industry group

By IBI Magazine

The Marine Industry Association (MIA) of New Zealand has welcomed the formation of a new marine industry group, MIA Northern Group, to represent the interests of the marine sector in Opua, Whangarei and Marsden Cove.

Dennis Maconaghie of Friendship Yachts is the chair of the new group.

"This new arrangement will have benefits both ways — better support for the sector in Northland from the national body and, with Dennis sitting on the full MIA board, better representation at a national level of issues and opportunities in Northland," said Peter Busfield, the MIA's executive director, in a statement.

Recent studies estimate the value of Northland's boatbuilding and refitting sector to be around NZ$100m, much of which is foreign exchange earnings. The sector employs over 400 workers and more than 50 apprentices.
