British manufacturer Scorpion RIBS has delivered its brand new 1080 model to Land Rover BAR, Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup team. The boat joins the team for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Portsmouth, which begins this week.
Scorpion is an official supplier to Land Rover BAR and has already supplied two Scorpion chase boats to support the British team.
The Scorpion 1080 features a proprietary designed deep V twin stepped hull (resin infused and vacuum-sealed) designed to make the boat quicker, lighter and stronger. These factors also contribute to the comfort, reliability and fuel efficiency of the new craft.
“The new Scorpion 1080 will be a welcome addition to our existing Scorpion chase boat fleet,” Ben Ainslie comments. “The unique nature of the foiling America’s Cup boats means that we need a support boat that can operate at high speed for long durations, comfortable enough to keep the shore team safe, alert and able to positively input into training programmes,” he adds.
Commenting on the delivery, Patrick Byrne, director of Scorpion RIBS, says: “We’ve had a partnership with Ben and his team since the 2012 Olympics, and are extremely proud to be supporting them as they represent the UK in the America’s Cup. The materials used in the new boat mean it’s lighter and more environmentally friendly than our previous models, and has enabled us to reduce the size of the engines and the weight of the boat which has increased the top speed of the craft.”
The new Scorpion 1080 model can also be used for leisure. The wider hull design gives a greater flexibility of deck and seating configurations make it suitable for a day boat for trips and sunbathing.
The RB-maker says the new model is available with a range of custom configurations from seating and upholstery, to clever pop up tables, full height heads and canopies is endless. The boat will be on display at the Cannes and Monaco Boat Show later this summer.
