The winner of the Innovation in a Production Process Award will be announced with other category winners at the gala dinner at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam on the night of November 18

Monte Carlo Yachts, Formula Boats and Karnic are all in contention to win the Innovation in a Production Process Award, sponsored by Whale, in the penultimate shortlist to be announced for the Boat Builder Awards for Business Achievement, due to take place at a gala dinner during METSTRADE on November 18.

The judges praised Monte Carlo Yachts’ modular construction techniques that effectively reduce the boat to three component parts – superstructure, deck and interior. All interior modules are built outside the hull, simplifying the production process considerably and helping to save up to 50% in production time. All time and cost savings are then channelled back in to improve quality and finish.

Formula Boats’ new FormulaFlex program, developed to allow each buyer to customise their boat to various degrees with no extra cost, also caught the eye of the judging panel. Further upgrades are also available through its FormulaFlex MyWay program. Formula’s unique approach has required a total revision of production communications, from computer generated instructions on the production ticket to face-to-face encounters between the point of sale and the shop floor, enhanced by the latest in wireless technology.

In order to eliminate the dependence on individual technician skills, Polish boatbuilder Karnic has developed its Smart Production Controller (SPC) – a step-by-step guide to instruct technical staff in every operation and for every model. It effectively acts as the tool to guide human hands to perform tasks in the same way as robot arms are programmed to make certain repetitive movements in high volume production lines. The judges were particularly impressed that the system was developed in house and is capable of accommodating any boat size and type.
