The International Boat Show Palma and Palma Superyacht Show have both closed with positive outcomes. All exhibitors spoken to by IBI reported having experienced a good show with a higher quality of visitor and good prospects of deals to follow – be it charters, pre-owned sales or other. There was also a record number of visitors at 40,000 – a rise of 14% on the previous year – and a number of sales were achieved.

The Palma Boat Show has made a strong comeback after being cancelled three years ago and the addition of the Palma Superyacht Show, supported by MYBA, has given it a definite boost and wider spread of business. The two shows saw over 200 companies participating and 180 yachts and boats on show, including 70 superyachts. The other distinct feature of these shows is that they contain a very large percentage of sailing yachts.

The strength of the turnaround of the show is reflected in the fact that the Balearic Islands Economy & Competitiveness Department is already working on next year’s edition, as 75% of the current exhibitors have already requested a stand.

The 33rd edition of the Palma Boat Show and the 4th Palma Superyacht Show will be held between April 28 to May 2 and it will also be actively marketed at the Cannes and Monaco shows in September. The director of the Palma Boat Show, Chema Sans, says that the record visitor numbers demonstrate the “compatibility between the model of the fair and the needs of the commercial sector”.

In terms of business, Princess Motor Yacht Sales reported the sale of a V39 and a Princess 72 with the expectation of more sales to follow. Sanlorenzo, Azimut, Ferretti, Sunseeker, Pearl and Fairline, to name a few, all reported a positive show with serious enquiries to follow up which they hope would bring deals in the following weeks.

On the superyacht side, all the leading brokers such as Frasers, Burgess, Northrop & Johnson, Camper & Nicholsons International, Dahm International, Ocean Independence and Bluewater also reported a good outcome with a strong anticipation of business to result from their participation. Local yacht refit companies STP and Astilleros Mallorca Shipyard were among several others in sharing in the seeming success of the event.

In terms of not so positive comments, a number of exhibitors called for more marketing of the event and some were questioning the necessity of a fifth day. There were also calls to improve the infrastructure of the Port of Palma such as drafts, moorings and parking.
