Insight into industry’s latest innovations, networking with colleagues and clients, first-rate dining and entertainment, and an after-party celebration are all on tap at the 2022 Boat Builder Awards

Environmental Improvement in Manufacturing Process, sponsored by HP Watermakers,  is the newest category to join the Boat Builder Awards line up recognizing achievements across all aspects of the business – marketing, design, collaboration, environmental responsibility as well as individual contributions.

For this category, the BBA panel of judges were looking for boat builders and shipyards that have made small or large changes to improve their businesses and/or production processes, resulting in measurable reductions in environmental impact.  They were impressed by the range of initiatives under way across the industry and have narrowed the list down to the three companies shortlisted below.

BBA SHORTLIST for Environomental Improvement in Manufacturing Process

Baltic Yachts

Sustainability strategies

Baltic Yachts takes an holistic view of its sustainability strategies, seeking gains in many areas of its operations. It measures more than 30 parameters of its manufacturing impacts, which has resulted in a two-thirds reduction of its carbon footprint since 2018. It also works very hard on reducing the lifecycle emissions of its yachts in their anticipated operation. Significant reductions or even elimination of fossil fuel dependency has been achieved to achieve its customer focus of ’lighter, stiffer, faster, greener – together.

Beneteau Group

Integration of bio-sourced materials and recyclable resin at scale

Beneteau Group has taken significant steps towards rolling out less impactful and now fully recyclable materials at scale for its boat construction. More than 30,000 GRP parts are already manufactured from a combination of bio-sourced resins as well as hemp fibres that are grown locally to its main manufacturing operations in France. This represents a reduction in the Group’s CO2 emissions of 11 per cent. Thanks to close collaboration with its supplier, ARKEMA,the Group will also unveil a serial production boat using 100 per cent recyclable resin. The Beneteau First 44 will launched at the forthcoming Paris and Düsseldorf boat shows.

Boston Whaler (Brunswick Group)

Fully recyclable GRP boat R&D

The Boston Whaler team has identified a material and process that will ultimately reduce or eliminate the need to landfill Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) at end of its life. Composite parts made from this new resin can be easily ground and then compounded with other thermoplastic resins whose properties can be enhanced by the recycled material. The acrylic thermoplastic resin can also be turned into recycled polymer for use in recycled resin production. This will allow for manufacturing of a new boat with the same mechanical properties. The first prototype hull with the new recyclable materials is expected to be unveiled this year.
