New facility will serve Europe and American orders
The young sailing yacht brand Kraken Yachts, which until now has had its yachts built in China, is opening a build facility in Turkey which will cater for orders from cruising sailors in Europe and the East coast of America.
The Hong Kong-headquartered company has set up a partnership with the Turkish custom yacht builder, Su Marine, based at Tuzla, near Istanbul. The yard, according to Su Marine’s website, includes two building bays up to 60m (196ft) and two up to 45m (148ft). The production plant is located inland from the nearest access point on the Sea of Marmara.
As part of setting up the new build arrangement, Kraken Yachts will offer a delivery service from Turkey to Annapolis for US$6,000. The Turkish operation will complement the Chinese yard at Xiamen – which caters for the Australasian and US West Coast market – with in-build photographs and video coverage. Kraken Yachts are also to open a UK sales office in Ipswich, Suffolk, the heart of sailing in the UK’s East Anglia region.
Dick Beaumont, Chairman of Kraken Yachts, said: “I am delighted we are starting production in the Med as I know from experience it is the best location in which to cut your teeth before the start of a global cruise as the winds are generally light; the area is culturally friendly and the waters are protected.”
Tim Grunberg, mManaging director of Su Marine, commented: “Kraken seems to have found a sweet spot where there are very few other manufacturers in the category. I haven’t seen very many true blue water cruisers that one would feel comfortable or confident in taking the entire family for long cruises, especially off-shore. There are a number of features that seem to be unique such as the zero keel that truly impressed me and made me think.”
To date Kraken yachts has launched a three model range of sailing cruiser yachts in the sizes of 15.2m (50ft); 17.7m (58ft) and 20m (66ft). The first Kraken model made its appearance in 2015.
