The joint venture could be producing cars as early as mid-decade
A seemingly unlikely partnership between two of Japan’s largest corporations could see the birth of a new automotive company later this year, following the announcement that Sony and Honda have signed a memorandum of understanding outlining a commitment to establish a company specialising in “high value-added battery electric vehicles” and mobility services.
“Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated extensive global experience and achievements in the automobile industry over many years and continues to make revolutionary advancements in this field, we intend to build on our vision to ‘make the mobility space an emotional one,’ and contribute to the evolution of mobility centered around safety, entertainment and adaptability,” says Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida.
This is not Sony’s first foray into automotive, as the company has been looking at its camera sensor technology for use in self-driving vehicles and raised eyebrows during the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show with a technology-packed concept car, demonstrating how the autonomous Vision S concept could find its own way around in the self-driving era. At this year’s event, Sony announced plans to establish a dedicated division looking into entering the electric vehicle market, according to New Atlas.
