BRP today reported sales of C$898.1m for its first quarter ended April 30, 2015, an 18.4% increase over the same period a year ago. The company reported normalised net income of C$37.2m, up 124% from a year ago.
“Despite headwinds from a volatile currency situation, difficult market conditions in Russia and in Latin America and a more aggressive competitive environment, our first quarter was slightly better than planned,” said José Boisjoli, president and CEO, in a statement.
BRP’s Seasonal Products category, which includes Sea-Doo personal watercraft, had sales of C$271.2m for the quarter, up 47% from C$194.6m a year ago. BRP said in a statement the increase was due to a higher volume of PWC sold from earlier shipments following the completion of production ramp-up at its facility in Querartaro, Mexico. A favourable foreign exchange rate variation of C$12m added to the sales increase.
Its Propulsion Systems, which includes Rotax engines and Evinrude outboards, reported sales of C$102.5m compared to C$497.3m a year ago. The engine division saw the 5.3% sales increase from a favourable mix of outboard engines because of its E-TEC G2 introduction and a favourable currency rate variation of C$2m.
The company expects sales for its Seasonal products to be flat or up 4% for the year, while it expects Propulsion Systems sales to rise from 7% to 10% for the year. It forecasts total sales to be up 5% to 9%, while normalised net income is forecasted to be down 9% or flat for the year.
