Plans for a new 160-berth marina in Taiwan’s southern port city of Kaohsiung were announced this week in the run-up to the 3rd Taiwan International Boat Show (TIBS).
A joint initiative between Taiwan’s Port of Kaohsiung and Kaohsiung City government, Love River Bay Pleasure Yacht Marinawill encompass Wharves 13-15 of the Port of Kaohsiung – Taiwan’s largest international commercial port. When completed, the marina will be able to accommodate 160 boats with an average length of 15m and a width of 5m, making it the country’s largest marina for pleasure yachts and a model for future marina development – something that is sorely needed in Taiwan.
The Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) is investing around NT$500 on the new marina, which will cover 10 hectares of near-shore water with a depth of 6m-8m and 460m-long piers. Piers will also be open to smaller pleasure craft and commercial pleasure boats, creating opportunities for the public to get out onto the water. Access to an adjacent 500-car parking garage will also be available, along with a land area able to accommodate the needs of several thousand visitors and tourists.
It is hoped that the new marina will encourage locals to take greater advantage of the leisure marine opportunities available in the city, spurring economic activity, encouraging more private-sector investment, creating new tourism and commercial value, and instilling new vitality into Kaohsiung City’s Asia New Bay Area. More than 10,000 pleasure yachts are said to ply the waters off the Port of Kaohsiung each year. But Taiwan has yet to develop world-class marina facilities, representing a promising area of future planning and development.
According to Boats International, Taiwan is the world’s fourth-largest producer of yachts over 24m and the biggest in all of Asia, with much of related national production concentrated in Kaohsiung’s harbor area. The Port of Kaohsiung itself enjoys safe, stable harbour conditions, a pleasant climate year-round, and convenient access to inland transportation.
Completion of the Love River Bay Pleasure Yacht Marina Project is scheduled for 2018, after which time it will be connected via Kaohsiung City’s light-rail system to various destinations including the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center, home to the bi-annual Taiwan International Boat Show (TIBS).
The third edition of TIBS is currently underway. IBI is at the show and will be reviewing the event in the April issue of the magazine.
