36 superyachts visited Phuket’s Yacht Haven Marina in February

The strong commitment to growing marine tourism pursued by the Thai government is gaining momentum – although, as always, there is more to do. The latest success indicator is a record number of superyacht visits to Phuket the main yachting centre in the countries.

Last month, Yacht Haven Marina saw visits by 36 superyachts with a total length of 1,582m and an average length of 43.9m per vessel. This is a new record and it is a sign that all the promotional work that has been undertaken and the awareness that had been developed by the Thai Yachting Business Association and others such as Andy Treadwell, who shared in the Thai Yacht Show and RendezVous in January, is paying dividends.

There is still some way to go for the long-planned charter licence to allow foreign-flag visiting superyacht to charter while in the region to be implemented.

Anthony Gould, CEO of Phuket-based Galileo Maritime Academy, said: “This all-time record for any marina in Asia is the result of many factors including government actions, but also the sheer beauty and abundance of pristine anchorages and remote islands of Pang Nga Bay, the Mergui Archipelago, the islands of the Andaman Sea as well as those around Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.

“Thailand has become the central hub for much of this industry and has a well-developed infrastructure at the heart of the finest cruising areas, including the only Asia-based maritime academy for superyacht crew which is accredited by the UK government Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and approved to issue MCA certification to ship’s crew.”

It is understood that a good number of the 36 superyachts at Yacht Haven Marina had some crew that have been trained and certified at Galileo Maritime Academy. The Academy is where many new recruits entering the industry have started their careers.

This makes Galileo an important asset and strategic benefit to the industry, as it enables the visiting superyachts to refresh and recruit the best graduates in the industry and whose qualifications are recognised in all 174-member countries of the International Maritime Organisation.

Yacht Haven Marina is well-equipped for looking after visiting superyachts of all sizes. It offers a range of superyacht berths of up to 150m (492ft) or more.
