Statistical Survey’s Quarterly Trend report for IBI Plus shows total US sales of fibreglass boats 30 feet and above surged through the third quarter of 2013 posting 22% year-on-year (y/y) growth compared to less than 3% in the previous period. As in Europe, much of the US suffered a slow spring selling season due to colder and wetter-than-normal weather across much of the nation through June, followed by a robust summer that boosted third quarter boat sales.
Thus far, the large boat sector has failed to take part in the general recovery enjoyed by the US boating industry during 2012 which saw total powerboat sales increase 10.7%. But the third quarter uplift in big boat sales may represent the long-waited turn for boats 30-feet and above.
Although preliminary estimates of total sales of fibreglass boats in America have been previously published, there is a time lag on accessing complete data for the large boat segment, which is presented in detail on IBI Plus in the accompanying quarterly report.
In addition to showing the overall performance of the big boat market in the US, the report also shows the quarterly progress and ranking of the top 20 market leaders in both the 30ft+ motorboat and sailboat sectors in the US, based on unit sales.
The third quarter 2013 report shows Bénéteau moving up to 9th place for 30ft+ motorboat sales in America. Other imported brands ranked among the top sellers in the US include Azimut, Apreamare, Jenneau, Robertson and Caine, Bavaria, Hanse, Dufour, Fountaine Pajot, Elan and Delphia.
The fourth quarter report with final data for 2013 on big boat sales in the US is expected by the end of March.
