The DG3 launched in Miami last week and is already shipping to customers

Marine and RV product supplier Dometic knew its DG3 Gyrostabilizer – a new concept in how to keep boats steady amid waves and wakes, delivering a smooth, safe, and seasick-free ride – was game-changing technology, and the Miami International Boat Show Innovation Awards judging committee agreed.

The DG3 replaces traditional hydraulic systems with an all-electric package that uses less energy, recaptures energy and cuts the time of spin-up and spin-down.

Current systems on the market typically take 50 minutes to spin-up for use. Dometic has cut that time by 65% to just 16 minutes, while spin-down time is 15 times faster at just 20 minutes. Competitive product can take as long as eight hours. Plus, during spin-down, the system recaptures about 10% of the energy to recharge its battery. It also captures wave energy for additional charging. Overall, the DG3 reduces power consumption by 40% compared to competing products, reducing the need for an onboard generator in many applications.

“We addressed the pain points that [boaters] identified,” said Dometic marine segment president Eric Fetchko. “Competitors call [their systems] ‘active stabilisation’, but I call it ‘reactive’, he told IBI. “We actually drive the gyro. We don’t react to the waves. We have an IMU on there that measures the wave state, and we can actually move the gyro [to adjust to conditions].”

Dometic launched the product globally last week and is already shipping units. “We’re not just launching a new product, we’re taking Dometic into an important new category for the global boating business,” Fetchko said.

The DG3 as an easy “drop-in” replacement for other comparably sized systems available in the market and will also be available as an OEM installation.
