Monroe County is starting to prosecute yacht owners renting their vessels through the website
Monroe County, Florida – which is made up entirely of the Florida Keys – is cracking down on Airbnb rentals, and has its first-ever test case pending against the owner of a 40ft sportfishing yacht.
“The county is starting to prosecute these,” Steve Williams, assistant county attorney, said at last week’s meeting of the County Commission in Marathon, according to the Miami Herald. “We’re going to bring our very first one.”
The boat is docked on Little Torch Key, and is therefore on county land, making it subject to local codes and ordinances. The county has yet to go after sailboats and yachts on Airbnb that operate or are moored offshore.
The boat was listed on Airbnb at US$111 per night and offering fishing trips for extra fees. The yacht was operating as a nightly rental, which isn’t allowed unless the property owner has a transient rental license.
The case is set for a hearing at 9am on 28 February.
