Connecticut Governor proposes 6% sales tax on boats

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont’s proposed 6% sales tax on boats was met by a regatta of boaters and industry professionals sailing into the state capital to inform lawmakers just how devastating the increase could be to the state.

Last year, the state lowered its sales tax on boats to 2.99% to be more competitive with neighbouring Rhode Island, which has no sales tax. Local dealers said their business increased dramatically, according to WINH-TV, leading them to hire more people. They now warn the tax increase to force them to lay off those workers as they prepare for the start of the boating season.

Republican lawmakers are standing with the boaters in speaking out against the sales tax hike, while the Governor’s Office said it is listening to the concerns of everyone that is worried about the increase in taxes, but considers the proposal a matter of fairness.
