New 70-footer takes cat builder into new league

Aquila Power Catamarans is steadily expanding its powered catamaran range announcing at the Cannes show last week that it would be launching an Aquila 70 in 2020 at one of the US spring-time shows. This is by far the largest model the brand, which builds in China at the Sino Eagle facility in Hangzhou, has introduced to date. Its other models are the 32, 36, 44 and 48 power cats.

Dave Bigge, Aquila’s vice president International Sales, explained the major success of the range over its short existence of just four to five years. He told IBI: “In that time we have built over 100 Aquila 36s, 108, Aquila 44s  and the other models also offer high production numbers.” The design of the Aquilas is a combination of the J&J design studio based in Slovenia supported by in-house design resources and other professional consultants.

To date 50% of the sales are to the US and the other 50% shared between Europe, South East Asia and the Middle East. The dealer network in addition to the US distribution outlets covers 22 countries in 29 locations, Bigge explained.

As to the new Aquila 70, the first has been bought by Marine Max which handles Aquila’s US distribution and the second one is in build. Bigge also pointed out that a number of other new models were planned for 2020 but he did not give the sizes.
