UK-based technical marine clothing brand Gill has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category. The company was honoured for building export sales to 75 per cent of total revenue in the financial year ended September 2011.

Nick Gill, company founder and chairman, said the award was the result of many years’ hard work, growing the business and reinvesting for the future.

“We have built a reputation as the Technical Brand,” he says. “Twenty five per cent of the company works in product design and development and the quality and innovation of the product range has contributed enormously to the success of the business. Additionally we have stuck to our core business and have not been distracted. We seemed to have sailed through the recession unscathed.”

Founded in 1975, Gill is said to be one of the three biggest technical marine clothing brands in most countries, including the US where it is generally regarded as the single biggest brand. The products are regularly worn by world champions, Olympic teams and round the world sailors.

Gill has also just been confirmed as the technical clothing sponsor to Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week for a further three years.
