BRP today reported sales of C$821.1m for its second quarter ended July 31, 2015, a 4.1% increase over the same period a year ago. The company reported a net loss of C$68.3m for the quarter, compared to a loss of C$3.6m a year ago.
The company said that sales from its Seasonal Products division, which includes Sea-Doo, were up 1.4% to C$263.4m for the quarter. The higher sales, according to a BRP statement, were due to earlier shipments of snowmobiles and a favorable exchange rate valuation. That increase was partially offset by lower volumes of PWC sold due to earlier deliveries made in the first quarter compared to last year.
“Two years after the introduction of the Sea-Doo Spark, we can now affirm that we have achieved our goal of rejuvenating the personal watercraft industry,” said José Boisjoli, president and CEO, in the statement. He added that PWC sales have grown globally by more than 25%.
Sales in its Propulsion Systems business, which includes Evinrude and Rotax, increased by 13% to C$95.4m for the quarter. The increase in revenues was mainly attributable to a favorable mix of outboard engines sold due to the E-TEC G2 introduction and lower sales programs. Sales also rose because of a favorable foreign exchange rate variation of C$3m.
The company said that its “normalized” net income was C$4.0m, an increase of C$12.8m, which resulted in normalized diluted earnings per share of C$0.03, an increase of C$0.10 per share.
Boisjoli said he was “happy” with the momentum BRP products are gaining globally. “I remain confident that despite softer markets in Russia, Latin America and lately Canada, we are well positioned with our products’ portfolio to deliver strong results in the second half,” he said in the statement.
The company forecasts sales to increase by 5 to 9% for the fiscal year, while normalized net income could range from down 5% to up 4%.
