Authorities are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed a boat storage facility and six vessels in the Cape Cod community of South Dennis, Massachusetts, last weekend.

The 40ft x 60ft, three-storey structure was used as off-site storage for Karl’s Bait Shop in nearby Harwich, whose services include wooden boat restoration and fibreglass repair.

Four fibreglass boats inside and two wooden craft outside were burned, with several others damaged. Firefighters from four area departments battled the blaze, which was stopped before it could reach three 25ft wooden sloops located in a separate part of the facility.

The barn-like structure was made of pine, “which is very flammable and there was quite a bit of fuel load just from the fibreglass boats themselves,” said Harwich deputy fire chief Dave Le Blanc.

The State Fire Marshal’s office, along with local police and fire officials, are investigating. No dollar amount for the loss has yet been determined.
