As part of Indonesia’s strategy to boost its marine tourism sector, the country’s Tourism Ministry recently held two promotional events at marinas in Phuket. The subject of the promotion was the Sail Sabang 2017 regatta, which is scheduled to run from November 28 to December 5.

Sail Sabang is a leading South East Asian sailing event that links Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The two Tourism Ministry promotions were undertaken at the Phuket Yacht Club and Phuket Yacht Haven marina and 20 and 60 people respectively turned up to the events.

In a comment to The Jakarta Post, Dr Marsettio, the Ministry’s marine tourism advisor, said: “We will do everything in our power to attract yachters in Phuket to take part in Sail Sabang 2017. We will give out attractive incentives. So far there are already 65 yachts that have signed up for the event.”

As part of the Sail Sabang 2017 initiative, the Ministry is also highlighting business opportunities in three marinas in Phuket, Langkawi and Sabang that will be associated with the regatta. This will also include a programme of other events.

These include a science and technology seminar and exhibition to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Jambore Iptek Sabang, a Sail Sabang carnival and parade, the Aceh Cultural Week, the Archipelago Youth Ship, International Aerobatic Show and Cruise Ship International welcome ceremony.

“These supporting events,” Marsettio told the Post, “are expected to attract yachters to take part in Sail Sabang 2017. The next promotion will be held in Langkawi on November 9 and Pangkor on November 11.”

"Sail Sabang 2017 is a world-class marine tourism acceleration programme,” Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said. “We have to closely monitor the preparation so that the event goes as planned."
