Messe Frankfurt has cancelled the Johannesburg Boat and Water Show, the company confirmed this week. The organiser did not divulge reasons for the decision, but said they would concentrate their efforts on creating one national show in Cape Town.
Messe Frankfurt has run the Johannesburg show for the past six years.
“The show will no longer take place. Instead, they [Messe Frankfurt] have turned their attention to Cape Town where they will be focussing their resources on creating one national boat show instead of two regional shows,” the company said in a statement prepared for IBI.
An industry insider said last year’s format, which included cars and bikes, may not have met expectations. There is speculation that some Johannesburg boating stakeholders may organise their own regional show next year.
Messe Frankfurt this week also confirmed dates for the 2018 Cape Town International Boat Show, which they acquired last year. It will take place from October 19-21 at the V&A Waterfront. The expanded show format will include a new retail area, dubbed ‘The Avenue’, featuring high-end luxury brands associated with the boating lifestyle.
Kathryn Frew, Messe Frankfurt event director, said: “There is so much long-term potential for the Cape Town International Boat Show and we are excited to grow the show from year to year.”
