Mercury Marine has announced a new series of V-8 outboards. The engine builder presented the new outboards at an event for boating writers at its Lake X facility in April. It had previously introduced new V-6 outboards at the Miami International Boat Show in February. The addition of the new V-8 models completes the largest product-development program Mercury has ever undertaken.
The new 4.6L V-8 outboard models include the 250 and 300hp Verado, 250 and 300hp FourStroke, and 200, 225, 250 and 300hp Pro XS. The launch also included the Pro XS 175hp 3.4L V-6.
“In Miami, we said the V-6 was step one of our 2018 introductions and we are thrilled to officially announce step two,” said John Pfeifer, Mercury Marine president in a statement. “These new V-8 engines, like the V-6, will set a new benchmark in the marine industry in the eyes of the consumer.”
Pfeifer said that, along with the 3.4L V-6 family released in Miami, the new V-8 engines fill out Mercury’s portfolio in the 175-300hp range. “These engines are naturally aspirated, durable, powerful and provide options for the consumer that they’ve never had before,” said Pfeifer. “This new lineup aligns with what consumers are asking for and we are delighted to deliver it to them.”
At the Lake X event, Mercury Racing also introduced its 250R and 300R outboards. The naturally aspirated, 4.6L V-8 four-stroke engines share Mercury Racing’s Quad Cam Four Valve (QC4) sterndrive technology that includes four aluminum valve heads and DOHC valve train. These features are integrated into Mercury’s proprietary V-8 cylinder block with high performance hardware. The new platform replaces the two-stroke V-6 250XS and 300XS models. The V-8 powerhead provides 44% in increased displacement compared to the legacy two-strokes. Both models come with a three-year factory warranty.
Mercury’s Sea Pro division also launched 4.6L V-8 225-, 250, and 300hp four-stroke outboard models for the commercial market. It launched a 175hp outboard at the Miami show. Sea Pro now offers four-stroke commercial outboards from 40hp-300hp.
