Maltese developer Midi plc has submitted a revised masterplan to the Malta Planning Authorities related to the restoration and redevelopment of Manoel Island. The island is actively involved in the yacht industry in Malta, being the location of Manoel Island Shipyard and Manoel Island marina.
According to the Times of Malta, Midi is looking to invest some €400m in its plans which cover 30% of the island’s total area on its southwest side. Included in this project will be the upgrade of the current marina from 220 berths up to 350, including more berths for superyachts centred on a new superyacht jetty. Currently the marina can accommodate yachts up to 80m (263ft).
The marina will be overlooked by landscaped gardens and include a shoreline walkway. Other facilities planned include marina-related commercial areas, a boutique hotel, casino, sports facilities and various other leisure and cultural facilities.
There will also be a promenade which runs up to the old Lazaretto buildings and the 18th Century Fort Manoel, both of which are being fully restored. Around Fort Manoel there will be a public park and within the whole area there will be a car park for 2,000 vehicles.
