German sailor Klaus Ottes died yesterday during Marmaris International Race Week (MIRW) in Turkey.

Ottes' body was found at sea in the early morning and has been sent for an autopsy. Turkish police and the coast guard are continuing their investigations.

Klaus Ottes was a member of the Marmaris Yacht Club and had been the skipper of the ‘press boat’ for many years. His sudden dead has caused great sorrow amongst sailors at the club.

The Marmaris Yacht Club has organised Marmaris International Race Week for 28 years, elevating it to the most popular race in the Eastern Mediterrenean with the highest attendance in the region.

This year’s race runs from October 28 to November 3. There are 114 yachts from 13 countries, although Russian teams are a clear majority.

Klaus Ottes will be commemorated on the closing day of the race.
