The Singapore Boating Industry Association (SBIA) has announced that it is to work with Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) to develop a watersports show. ADEX Asia is the organiser of Singapore’s premier dive show. In 2018, ADEX will introduce Watersports Asia as part of the event’s offering.
ADEX Asia 2018 runs from April 6-8 at the Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore and the inaugural Watersports Asia event will be a cluster within the annual ADEX dive show.
YP Loke, chairman of SBIA, says: “In support of the development of watersports in Singapore, SBIA hopes to showcase and promote the sector to the growing body of enthusiasts and prospective customers. This sector in Singapore is well institutionalised, with many national sea sports associations recognised by the Singapore Sports Council. The support of public agencies such as the Ministry of Education and People’s Association is testament to the many benefits that healthy outdoor activities like watersports bring to the family and community.”
Speaking to IBI, Loke said: “The watersports scene in Singapore and Asia is vibrant and diverse. Watersports activities include among others, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, dragon boat racing, sailing, windsurfing, SUP (stand up paddling), kite-surfing, jet-skis, water-skiing & wakeboarding. Activity centres and instruction at all levels is available in many centres across Singapore. Venues include the various marinas, sailing clubs (Changi & SAF Yacht Clubs), beach clubs (along the East Coast & Sentosa) and the People’s Association’s Seasports Centres.
John Thet, show organiser for ADEX and Watersports Asia, says: “Watersports compliment diving and although we start off the watersports section modestly within ADEX, we hope to grow the show over the years so that it can stand on its own.”
The annual Singapore Yacht Show and Asia Pacific Superyacht Conference will also run just after the new Watersports event, starting on April 10. While the Yacht Show and Conference have become strong events, they do not focus on the small boat and watersports market, which is a considerable sector in South East Asia.
