Volvo Penta has expanded its product line with the launch of new D8 engine. The new model is available for both IPS and inboard shaft applications and both in 7.7lt swept volume.

The new engine features Volvo Penta’s signature technology seen in other models in the range for high efficiency, low noise and low fuel consumption as well as the extras for integration into its electronic vessel control Glass Cockpit. The units comply with the EPA TIER III and RCD II.

The IPS options are the D8-IPS800 with an output of 600hp at 3000rpm and D8-IPS700 with an output of 550hp at 2900rpm. Both packages are designed for twin and triple installation providing speeds ranging from 20-40knots.

The new IPS Pod will now be known as IPS 15 and joins the line up with IPS 10 (435hp/3600rpm), IPS 20 (725hp/2500rpm) and IPS 30 (900hp/2300rpm).

Volvo Penta said that the propulsion efficiency during middle and top speeds with the D8 is improved by 25-35% compared to traditional inboard shafts. This translates into 20% higher top speed, 30% longer cruising range and 15% faster acceleration. In addition, both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 30% compared to inboard shafts.

New IPS Pod

The new IPS 15 comes with unique design features including a 6-inch exhaust system, one drive for all ratings and a new propeller series N optimised for speeds ranging 20-40ks, to name a few.

Volvo Penta has also released a joystick control for traditional twin inboard shaft applications. The system provides electrical steering of rudders, docking mode, joystick driving and autopilot.

The last addition to the 2016 line up is a e-Key remote, which Volvo Penta claims is the first a car-like unit on the market that is connected and integrated into the boat’s entire driveline with the option to connect additional electrical equipment to the key. The system operates within a range of 100m.

In addition, Volvo Penta’s new battery management for theft protection and battery control comes with its unique display. All features benefit of the integration with Volvo Penta’s Glass Cockpit System, the latter is now also available with displays ranging 7 to 24 inches.
